ALEXANDRA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
ASSAULT. A serious assault was committed on a married woman named Conn on Wednesday last by another woman named Kelly and her husband. It appears that the man Kelly had rather roughly corrected one of Mrs Conn's children for some slight misdemeanour, who, when she went to expostulate on the treatment her children had received, waa struck over I the head with a large tin can by Mrs ! Kelly, inflicting a large serious wound on her forehead, after which, as she alleges, she was struck by Kelly with hie fist on the breast. Mr 3 Conn lost a deal of blood, and being enceinte waa in a dangerous condition. Dr, Blundell was 6ent for from Te Awamutu, in whose charge she now is, and recovering The Kellys are out on bail, but will make their appearance, in answer to the charge, at our next Resident Magistrates Court. We certainly thought on the accession, of the present Government to office, there would be no delay in the erection of our long promised and much needed new building for a post and telegraph office. It is to be hoped there will be no further delay in the matter, but that tenders may at once be called, for the money has been voted long since.
NATIVE SIATXEES. Rcwi and Tawhiao, I believe, met at last yesterday, at Kopua, at least, they had arranged to do so. This is their first meeting since Rewi returned from Auckland. As for some reason or other Rewi did not go to Hikurangi or meet with Tawhiao on his last visit to Te Kuiti. The report of the Hi raid* correspondent, that he had done so notwithstanding. There was no meeting of the natives generally called for, Rewi and Tawhiao merely wishiog to have a consultation together on native affairs as at present. I will endeavour to give you the result of their interview in my next letter. I notice in last week's Weekly Nam a paragraph noticing the capture of an " enormous eel," weighing 16 [lbs. This to us Alexandra folks sounds very funny, an eel of that weight being considered only a very moderate t-ized one. Henry turner, of Kiipiha, caught one at Te K.ori, in the Waipa, weighing 381b5., and within these last three weeks several averaging from 18lbs. to 251bs. Only on Friday last I made my dinner off part of one he caught, weighing 221bs.
CSICKET MATCH. The return cricket match, between the Alexaudr.i and Ngahiuepoiui teams, came off on -aturday last in the paddock of Frank Vieker's Esq. at Ngahiuepouri. 0n the arrival of the visitors they found that Mr Vickers, with his u*ual kindness, had everything prepared for their receotiou and comfort. A. good lunch and plenty of ref reshmentb were liberally provided by the Ngahiuepouri Club. The game was a most enjoyable one f bout 3 o'clock a heavy shower came down, which made a cessation of play a nece&sity, but did no harm to the ground, as will be seen hy the score. The Alexandra team weie the winners with rive wickets to spare. At the conclusion uf the match the u-iual compliments were exchanged, not forgetting Air Vicker's.
