HAMILTON PUBLIC HALL. Sir,— Can you inform the general public and myself whether the committee elected a few weeks back, to work with the trustees, have done anything yet tn promote the building qf th.o Efainilton Town Hall, or whether, fte trouble taken to get ' the. qo_n_nitte.a formed is thrown away ?— ' *• % m > &o>> Ak Inquirer. ■ <E --J.--I ] Sir, —-As statements have been made regarbing the probable actions of the « Hamilton electors m tho forthcoming 1 election, I think it my duty to make a t short statement of facts which have come } under my own knowledge. Mr Whitaker, ,| i although an oppositionist, is a re.a.n of ( coloni 1 experience, and a member of 1 whom it is said n.o Parliament can do t without, yet a small number of Hamilton r are responsible for inducing Mr , o 1 Whitaker to retire m favor qf. «jj". B. Iti Whyte, whose only qualification, beyond \ ti heing a local nym Is that he is, a capita- \ a list, and pnrehassiar. o^r large blocks of a native lands, therefore being- om of the g Ind ring cannot but be desirous to brmsr 0: these speculations fco a successful d isfi«e. While Mr Whitaker was being d infiueneod to retire, and Mr Whyte tl brought out on the same .principles, oi several Cambridge electors were using i oi every endeavour to find a candidate, c 5 | W undoubted colonial experience^ tc. Mr Whitaker was the only candidate. When Mr WhPaker retired, we felt it would be a slight to an experienced man to be asked to contest the seat with Mr White, yet we know we had m Mr J. P. Campbell the materials for making a politican of coming repute, and a gentleman wlio is bold enough to claim justice and fair play for the present Government. As soon as Mr Campbell was announced m the field, a gentleman from Hamilton set the ungrateful report afloat, that Hamilton would make it a trial of strength between the two towns, irrespective of political principles. This I look upon as a gross libel against the Hamilton electors, to bo told that they are going to sacrifice their principles for local jealousies. To' sbjpw that Mr Campbell is a man who isentStoly above petty feelings, I may state that, as a member of the Farmers' Club, he advocated that the Cattle Show m connection' with the Club should this year be held at Hamilton. To some of us there seems to be partiality m the way the speeches of the two candidates have been reported. For brevity's sake, Mr Campbell is incorrectly reported at Hamilton. Was it for the same reason that m the report of Mr Whyte's speech, questions asked and answered by Mr Whyte at Cambridge, and which are very material, are entirely' omitted. — Yours respectfully, An Eleotoe. [Our correspondent is laboring under a wisapprension if he supposes there has been any partiality shown to one candidate over another m our reports of election meetings ; more so still if he supposes that any misrepresentations have been wilfully made. Our columns are freely open to all sides, as the publication of his own letter should be sufficient proof. The candidates will h-ive an opportunity to-morrow, at the nominetion, to refer to the nutters m Avhich any supposed misrepresentation m*y have occurred, and of setting it right, nnd we shall tike ewe th »t our reporter, on th.t occasion, shill make no mist ike m representing the opinions of either candidate. — Ed.
