August 18th, 1879, A meeting of the ratepayers of the oombined parishes of Horotiu and Waipa was held to-day, at the Delta Hotel, to consider tho question of a division of the Newcastle Highway District, as proposed by the ratepayers at the Whatawhata end of the district. Mr Harris in the chair. The Chairman explained the object of the meeting. Mr Barton moved the first resolution, which was as follows :—" This meeting, in view of the apparently unanimous wish of the Whatawhata ratepayers, request the members representing the interests of Horotiu and Waipa ratepayers not to oppose a. division of the district, providing the pariah of. Horotiu is preserved intaat • and, in addition, we take from the mouth of the Ohote creek to the bridge, making the creek tho boundary, and that the liabilities be fairly divided." Mr Burton said in support of the resolution, that as considerable misapprehension appeared to exist in the minds of a portion of the ratepayers, he would give the meeting some figures that might help it to a decision, and at the same time j that Whatawh.ata ha^ nqt b,een fairly Seated, inthe past in regard to expenditure. Whilst there was expended in Horotiu the sum of £1164 Is 6d, and in Whatawhata £1023 19s 6d, being a difference in favour of Whatawhata of £359 W. os. As a further instance, last year, Horotiu collected £100, tq W^atawl^ata's £50. should hand over to our neighbours the worst portion, to keep in repair. We should uLso hand them over the Whatawhata punt, and 1000 acres, owned by natives, from whom it was impossible to collect any rate. Mr E. Fitzpatrick seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. um?^;. V - Fi^Pfttrick then proposed, lhat this meeting ask the District Board to take steps to carry into effect Mr Barton s resolution, and the wishes of the Whatawhata settlers, re separation." Seconded by Mr Carpenter, and carried unanimously. Mr Washer then proposed, " That this meeting recommends that works at present going on be suspended until the question of Separation be settled." Mr Geo. Hale seconded. — Carried. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated a most unanimous and enjoyable afternoon's proceedings. — Communicated.
