WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The roguiar monthly meeting of the | above Council was held at the Ohaupo j Hotel on Tuesday last. Present: Crs. Germaun (Chairman), ! Sloane, Corboy, Steele, Ouuniugham, Hadfield aud Buttle. STATION ON PATEIiINGI EOAD. Cr. Germann drew the attention of the Council 'to a proposed alteration of site for a railway station on the Paterangi road, which, m his opinion, would be productive of much inconvenience to residents m the yioinifcy of Paterangi, and at the samo time would be of uo advantage to any other part of the district, the uew site proposed being within about a milo of the Te Awamutu Station. Cr. Steele proposed that Or. Germann, Sloaue, aud Cunningham be a committee to take steps to secure the station on the Paterangi raod, for the greatest convenience of the public where originally planned. Tho motion was seconded by Cr. Hadfield aud agreed to. DISTRIBUTION OP SUBSIDY. Cr Sloane theu read tho report of the Finance Committee, showing the way m which the balanco of the subsidy had been distributed among the various Eoad Boards. The following are amounts allotted: — Alexandra Town Board. £14 17s 8d ; Hamilton District Board £203 9s lid ; Kihikihi Town Board, £17 ; Mangipiko District Board, £136 ls6d; Tuhikaramea, £68 Is 3d ; Newcastle £69 7s 4d ; Ngaruawahia Town Board, £70 7s 4d; Pukekura, £28 ls lid ; Rangiaohia, £173 17s. This allocation had been made on a basis of lis 3d m the £ on amount of rates collocted by each district, for the year ending 31st March, 1878. Cr. Hadfield said the distribution appeared to have been made on £1745,. while the Government had only paid subsidy on £1619. He should, like to know whare the discrepancy was. Cr. Cunninghham thought some mistake had been made m the return sent by some of the District Boards of amount of rates collected. After some discussion, it was moved by Cr. Hadfield, seconded by Cr. Corboy. " That the Report of the Finance Committee be received, but lie m abeyance till such time as the clerk shall have procured a return frcm Wellington showing the amount of 'rates collected by the various Highway Boards for the period on wliich subsidy Avas paid." The motion being put to the meeting, Crs. Hadfieldj Cunningham, and Corboy voted for it ; against it, Crs. Steele and Sloane. It was, therefore, carried. In connection with this question Cr. Hadfield called the attention of the Council to. the „ way m which half a sum of £50 voted to the Mangapiko District Board for repairs to the bridge over Mangapiko, at Alexandra had been charged to the account of the Alexandra Town Board. He said he was given to understand that the repairs iv question would only cost a moiety of the sum voted, and it was not fau* that £25 should be charged to one district when the other handled all the money. Cr Germann explained that the sum of £50 having been voted for repairs to the bridge, Avhicu formed the boundary of the two districts, half the sum had been charged to each Board, but, if the sum required for tho work was less than tho amount voted, the Alexandra Board would have a claim on the Mangipiko District Board for the balance of their share of grant. WHATAWHATA FERRY. Cr. Corboy wished to ask the Council to reconsider the decision arrived at, at a former meeting, by which it Avas arranged that the expense of working the Whatawhata Ferry should be charged to the NeAvcastle Ridiug. He said this Council had voted the sum of £50 towards a bridge over the Waipa, at Te Rori, and also a like sum \of £50 towards approaches to the Narrows Bridge, and, he Avished to move, " That the working expenses of the Ferry m question, be a general charge ou the Comity Fund." The Chairman said, if a bridge Avas built at WhataAvhata, this Council would make a special grant, to assist iv the work, provided the Raglan County also contributed, but, at present, half tho expenses of Te Rori Ferry Avas charged to the Mangipiko District Board, and he thought the NeAvcastle Ridiug could uot cpmplain. Cr. Corboy gave notice of motion, for next meeting, " That this Council be at half of the working expenses of the Whatawhata Ferry, and deduct its por-. tion of it from the Newcastle District Board's share of subsidy, till such time as a bridge be erected at Whatawhata. On the motion of Cr. Hadfield, the meeting adjourned till 2 o'clock. NOTICE OF MEETINGS. On assembling, Cr. Buttle asked the Chairman if it was to be understood thafg iv future no notice of meeting Avould be given 'r He had always received oue before, aud but for corning to the market would not have been here to-day. The Chairman said according to Section G9 of the Counties Act, notice Avas not required except for special business. The Building Committeo submitted a report stating that ths Couuoil Chambers had been finished m a highly satisfactory manner, and recommending that a sum of £69 10s, beiug amount due to contractor for comple tion of contract extras aud deposit be paid. On tho motion of Cr. Sloane, seconded by Cr. Hadfield, the report Avas adopted and the account ordered to be paid. INSURANCE Oi" COUNCIL CHAMBER. Cr.
