CAMBRIDGE.
(From our Special Correspondent.)
Last night. Last night a meeting of Ngatiraukawa was held privately at Walker's Hotel, at which many of the leading men were present. Rewi' sne w line did not seem to meet with much favor, and a meeting vith him and Mr Sh'eehan was talked about for to-morrow (Saturday.) Your readers will have seen the boundaries of Rewi's territory as originally stated by him. It ran, as will be recollected, from Raglan a aofoss, to Pirongia, and to the Puniu, thence from , a point of departure on that river to Mangatautiri, thence by the.. Waikato River to Taupo, thence to a point near Mokau Jon to the Bea coast, thence to the place of commencement. He now diverges from the portion of line constituted by the Waikato River, by striking across. Horo Horo, and from thence to Taupo, taking a large slice of Ngatirau. kawa lands with the Tokane Plains. I do not think this will be carried, probably Rewi himself does not expect that it will, but he hopes that by fighting this first and then abandoning it he will seoure his original N as a compromise. This is a pure guess of mine, and may not have foundation in truth.. 1 give it fur what it is worth.
To-day the Court opened, and was adjourned until two o'clock, when it was again adjourned for the purpose of settling difficulties amongst Ngatihinerangis until 10 o'clook on Monday, Her Majesty's Birthday being very properly held as a non-working day. All the Ngatiraukawa cases have been adjourned, which does not appear to satisfy them. "What the result of the whole matter will be it is not very easy to predict. The fact df Eewi being willing to come into Court at all is a great advance on the old Chief's part, and is conclusive that his intentions are, in the main, pacific, but what the practical result is going to be outsiders do not and cannot know yet.
" What will he do with it." That is the .question we have to answer when Rewi's old line is established as 1 think it probably will be. Rewi knows, Ministers may know, the.public certainly do not know. The old man is as close es a rattrap. ~1 ■ :-.,■•■ . ~
