The special business having heen concluded the meeting was closed and the Council proceeded to transact the ordinary monthly business. The minutes of the previous meeting were, read aud confirmed. The correspondence was read aud the following accounts wero passod and ordered to be paid .viz :— -Mr Beirs, £2 2s ; Mr ft. Minn, £40 8s ; Mr T. G. Sandes, £6 14. Messrs Wilsons and tforton, £2 2s. Total £57 6s, chargeable to general account. Tenders were submitted for the painting of the Cambridge bridge and tho removal and improvement of tho Council Chamber, but tho Treasurer having reported that the County amount at the Bank was overdrawn, it was resolved to defer the execution of these works until funds were in hand. A renewal of his license to slaughter cattle was granted to Mr John _vmold till 31st December next. A sum of £50 was granted to the Cambridge Highway Board on conditions that it be expended in reducing the gradient on the hill near Lodlie : s bridge. Among the correspondence the attention of the Council was particularly drawn to a letter from Capt Ranciman the chairman of the Cambridge Highway Board, relative to that portion of the Hamilton Thames Railway, which passes through the Piako swamp.-* The letter is perhaps too long to publish entire, but the gist of it is, that the Government Engineers instead of running tho line upon the road made for the express purpose by the Piako Land Association, three years ago, which is now Bolidand fit for the purpose, have pegged out aline alongside, thus necessitating the cutting of another ditch and making a new road, which will require time , to settle, it; is presumed that the reason for this course is that the present road may housed for traffic, but Cfapt. Ranciman, states that as any delay in the construction of the, line would be highly prejudicial to the interests of the districts he would prefer that the present road be used for the railway and the questions of a traffic road may be considered hereafter, he urges the County Council to draw the attention of the Government and the public to the matter. The clerk was instructed to write to Mr Jas. Stewart to ascertain if Capt. Runciman has heen correctly informed at the same time expressing a hope that the line may be carried along the solid road. This concluded the business. [We are taking means to ascertain if this is really intended before referring again to the subject.]
