CAMBRIDGE FARMERS' CLUB.

A meeting was held on Monday evening last, at the Club House. Present : Messrs George E. Clark (President, in the Chair), Every Maclean, Peter Walker, s. S. Graham, J. P. Campbell, Francis Hicks, Henry Buttle, Wm. L. Martyn, Richard Reynolds, Johu Fisher, James Ruuoiman. Some visitors were also present, by invitation. Minute3 of lasfc meeting read and confirmed. new members. Messrs Frank, D. R. Small (of Maungakawa), John Hutchinson (of Orakau), Isaac Coates (of Hamilton), were elected member of the*Club, in the usual manner CORRESPONDENCE. , 5 . Captain MoPherson's letter, which was read at last meeting, was re-read, and also the -Secretary of the Club's reply to it. The latter was as follows : — Dear Sir, — Adverting to your letter of he 3rd instant, relative to the holding of the Cambridge Farmer's Club Cattle Show near Hamilton Railway Station, I am instructed to draw your attention to fche attached copy of correspondence between the Hamilton Borough Council and this club, from which you will see the Hamilton Town Clerk says the Council will communicate officially on the subject, which communication has not been rereived. The Club is anxious to abide by the motion of Captain Runciman carried at the meeting on the 4th November last, though it would be svilhng to alter the site to a more convenient plaoe than Sydney Square. The following resolution which was carried afc the meeting of the Club held on Monday evening, the 7th inst, is forwarded for information of yonr committee. "That this Club while desirous df meeting the wishes of the Waikato people in regard to holding the Show in the most convenient and central position beg to refer Captain Macpherson to tho correspondence which has already takeu place between fche Club and the Corporation of Hamilton, and would be glad to hear what arrangements can be made for carrying out the Show in a suitable manner." — I am, &c. Walter Scott, Secretary. The chairman hero stated that the time which was mentioned in Captain Rumanian's resolution had now lapsed. That resolution gave the Borough Couucil of Hamilton six months to reply to the offer of the Club regarding the holding of the showfor 1879, in Hamilton. No reply had been received from the Council, except the acknowledgement of the receipt of the letter by the Town Clerk. It was therefore competent for fche Club to take what action they thought proper in the matter. Mr Peter Walker said that the Chair- ' man was wrong in saying that no action had been taken afc "Hamilton The Mayor of Hamilton thought that the Borough Council was not exactly the proper body to reply to the resolution of Club, and he called a public meeting, at which a Provisional Committee, who were all members of the Club, was appointed to confer with tho Club. All that was required was to have the site removed from Sydney Square, Hamilton East, fco j some paddock convenient to the Hamilton j Railway Station. ' Capt. Runciman said that although the time had elapsed given by the resolution, he thought the matter should not be allowed to drop. Some time ago he had an idea that it would have been desirable to have amalgamated with the Waikato Pastoral and Agricultural Association, but it has now gone defunct. Before ifc was defunct however he had como to the conclusion that ifc would be far better to hold fche Show under the sole auspeces of the Farmers' Club. Ifc would be to the interest of the Club also to hold its noxt show near the Railway station at Hamilton. As the question was an important one, he thought ifc would be best for tho I Club fto go into committee on the matter, as members would nofc perhaps remember [ all they had to say on the subject when first on their legs. Ho • therefore I moved that the Club go into committee ) to discuss this subject. Mr Maclean seconded. Carried. Mr William Martyn said that some years ago they had a vory successful show at Cambridge. People then said we ought to go to Te Awamutu. They wenfc there and ifc was a failuro. Then ifc was Ohaupo thafc was the proper place, they wont there also, and ifc was a failuro. Then they had to come back to Cambridge, after all now, thoy woro wanted to go to Hamilton, and if that was a failuro they would then come back again here. They talk about stock coming from town, there were very few to come from thore. There were more pure 6tock fco be found about Cambridge than any where else in the Waikato. Captaiu Runciman said it was not the

beasts thafc would come from •> uckland, \ but ifc was tho people who wonld visit ■ tho -.how, and also it would bo a means of conciliating fcho whols Waikato. There was now somo petty jealousies existing botwoen the different parts of this district, and ho believed thafc if the Show 'Avas held afc Hamilton West, near to tho Railway Station, it would do more to do away with this than anything else. Mr John Fisher said, thoy had promised to go to Hamilton this year, and he thought they ought to fulfill their promises. Mr Martyn said that they had premised, only on certain conditions, and those conditions had nofc been fulfilled. Mr Maclean said, they had written to the Borough Council, at Hamilton, asking them to make a guarantee of so much towards the Show. He thought that thoy. would have replied that some £400 or £000 would he guaranteed for tbe purposes of tho Show, but they had received no definite proposal. Tho Borough Council had shifted the matter upon another party. Ilowevor, he was in favour of holding tho next show at Hamilton East, in Sydney Square. The visitors and stock coming by railway could very well walk from the station. But the majority of exhibits would be from this district, and there was great objection to taking them across the punt, and the Narrows bridge was too far round. It was such an expense to show cattle, thafc they had decided not to show again. They had as many as thirty men on the ground lasfc year. At i amilton, there was no accommodation for the stock. Mr Peter Walker said, that they had calculated what ifc would cost to erect covered yards, and found it was within their means. They could get the use of timber at hlamilfcou, for which, if they did not cut in less lengths than six feefc, they would only have to pay one and sixpence per 100 feet. These, yards that would be put up, would do very well to house the stock brought down the night before. All that the owners would have to do, would be to find the.m fodder. Mr J. P. Campbell was in favour of holding fche Show afc hia milton East. He though fcho people of Piako and Waifcoa were entitled to some consideration. But he would ask if all negotiations had ceasod between the Ulub and the Borough Council. The Chairman said that, it appeared to be the case. Tapfcain Kunciman, said tbat afc the last Show Mr Morrin had promised ,to give a very liberal subscription, both from himself and also collect others. Lasfc yoar they got some £50 or £60 from Auckland, Mr Morrin said this amount would be quadrupled if the Show was held at Hamilton. Ifc was the duty of all the settlers of this district to support the Show wherever it was held. Mr Maclean said that if they decided fco show their stock fchey would show them wherever tho -<how was held. But he would more that the Show be held afc Hamilfcon'Easfc, on Syduey Square. Mr Campbell seconded. Mr Fisher said tho Borough Council of Hamilton had not aobed properly with the . lub. If a small bill was arranged between two parties one would have no right to shift the responsibility of upon' some one else's shoulders without the consent of the other party. This waa what the Borough Oounoil had dune. They had shifted tho responsibility upon 1 the Hamilton Show Committee without the consent of the Clerk. Mr Pearson said the Club ought to appoint a committee fco confer with the Hamilton people and roport afc fche nexl; meeting of the > lub. Mr Buttle thought tho Borough Council ought to be written to again. He wouli. move that tho Secretar7 be instructed to' write to the Borough Council at Hamilton asking their intentions with regard to the proposed show. Captain Runieinan seconded. This was put aB an amendment and carried. PLOUGHING MATCH. Mr Buttle proposed, in accordance with the notice he gave last meeting, " Thatthe Club take the necessary steps to hold its annual ploughing match about the same time as last year, and that an exhibition of roots, such as turnips, carrots, mangolds, .potatoes, kc, be held at the same time, aud that the following gentlemen be a committee to carry it out : — Messrs E. B. Walker, Geo. E. Clark, John Fisher, Riohd. Reynolds, Wm- Martyn, Every Maclean aud the mover." Mr Maclean said, he would seoond the motion, if Mr Buttle would add implements to his list. Labour saving implements would add vory mubii.tp.the success of the affair, and the ploughing match is a very slow affair, without anything of the kind. It was agreed to add labour saving implements, and the motion was put and carried unanimously. NOTICES OP M0H0... Mr Buttle gave notice that, afc the next meeting of the Club, he would move, " That the Club hold its nexfc Show at Hamilton West." Captain Ruuciman gave notice that, afc next meeting. " He would nominate n committee to carry out the Show, for 1879, wherever.it would be held." This was all the business.
