THE BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION.
Owing, to the indisposition of the Returning Officer, who happened to be at Cambridge, there was no one to legally open the poll on Thursday morning, and the election for a Borough Councillor, in place of Mr Cox (resigned) lapsed. Mr Hammond, who had been seized with a violent billious attack, made two attempts on Weduesday evening to start for Hamilton, but was obliged to return and remain in Cambridge on Wednesday night. Early on Thursday morning he started a special messenger to Hamilton, appointing Mr Gelling as his deputy, but that gentleman declined to act. The occurrence is. linfortunate, as the whole proceedings wil havo to be commenced dc novo. Mr Hammond was still in bed last night, though much better we were glad to learn than on the previous day. Mr Macdonald's address will he found elsewhere.
