THAMES- WAIKATO RAILWAY.

Alluding to the suggestion made by this journal, that the best way fco gefc over the difficulties raised by Tukukino, the Maori obstructionist at tho Thames cud of U4O }iyc, waa.

to proceed vigorously with that portion of the line between Hamilton and the W&ihou, the ' Thames Advertiser' remarks : —

"Oar Waikato contemporary ia an adept at turning things to account, if we judge from the skill displayed m turning to account the recent opposition of Tukukino to road works m his district. So far, however, as the next section, indeed several sections, are concerned, no alarm need be fait, because Tukukino's authority does not extend beyond bhe Komafcn, and ib will be some time before the Kornata section can be open for bender. If bhe Government will only proceed wibh fche line by letting several contracts we have no doubt that Tukukino would as readily see the advantages of bhe work from bhe traffic which would follow from this snd as he would from Hamilton bo Oniahu. However, we have no desire to be selfish. We should hail wibh satisfaction fche acceptance of bhe tender for the Waikato end of the line ; bub we do desire bo see a few more conbracts let for this end, because at present we consider fche line has nob been commenced. The reclamation contracts go for nobbing m our estimation It is so much work accomplished for tbe benefit of fche Harbor Board, and bo please bhe whimsicality of a fow persons who are not over-gifted with modesty where Government favors are con. cerned ; bufc fche real work of railway I construction has not yet commenced, ! and we contend thab if these persons had not so interfered fche lino would ba opened to Puriri, or possibly to Hikutaia, before fche Assembly meets. As ib is, nothing has been done beyond bhe acceptance of tenders for these reclamation works, and sites for two stations —contracts which might, with advanbage, have been let last instoad of first.
