Notwithstanding the counter attracton at Piako, there was as good an attendance as of former occasions. There must have been 500 or 600 people on the ground. The natives attended in large numbers from Taupari district and from the settlements on the Waipa. Some dissapointraenfc was felt that Loafer did not appear to contest the Hurdle Race with Sportsman, but his place was well filled by Robin Hood, who, unfortunately, fell at the late Ohaupo Races. The horse led for a considerable time, and only gave place to Sportsman, two hurdles from home. The rider of Wananga came to grief at the first hurdle, b"t was not injured. Of course, she would have won, but for this. Handicap Huedle Race, of 20 sovs; with a sweepstake of 1 eov. each for acceptor*. The amount accruing from sweeps to go to the second horse, third horse to save his stakes. Nomination, 10s; acceptance, 10s. Distance : 2 miles, over 8 jumps, 3ft. 6in. high; Sportsman 1 Robin Hood 2 Won by two lengths. Irish Emigrant was nowhere. Acceptance, 1 sov. Distance : 2 milsa. Wizard ... ... 1 Sultan ... _ 2 Memento started favorite for this race, although Sultan had his admirers. Wizard's appearance ought to have made him favorite, and tha result proved him a good old stayer. In the first round, Orakau bolted off the course, and from this time, the others kept neck and neck, Memsnto inside, Sultan having the outside running. About half a mile from home, Sultan fell to the rear, and Wizird taking the lead, finished a length to the good. "Waoanga ... ... 1 Clyde 2 There was not much interest in this race. Mr Bromfield's Merry Andrew did not start, Wananga led from start to finish. Clyde took second place by a head. Maori Race, of 5 sovs. ; second horse to receive 2 sovd. Entrance, 10j. Distance ; 14 mile. For horse3, the bond 'fule property of, and ridden by Maories. Five horses to start, or no race.
