THE NEW RAILWAY TARIFF.
Sir, — As there seems to be a misunderstanding m regard to the interpretatio n of the above tariff, owing to the note at the head of the list not having been read with the main part, Avill you allow me to explain the real effect of the charges. The note is as follows: — "N. 8 .: In computing the charges from the f ollowiug table of rates per mile, the rate over each successive distance is to be computed severally, to make up the charge for the whole distance over which the goods are carried." Thus, to take your correspondents example, the result will be, on cattle, m class M : Lowest charge, 15s per truck, for any distance up to 10 miles, between 10 and 50 miles (40 additional at sd), 10s 8d; between 50 and 100 miles (50 additional, at 4d), ltis Bd, or, taking s. d. Ohaupo, first 10 milos . . . . 15 0 Ohaupo, next 40 miles . . . . 10 8 Ohaupo, next 44 miles .. .. 14 8 Total . . 94 miles . . . . 40 4 Or, Te Awamutu, say G milos ) o n further, at 4d . . . . ) - ° Grand total . . . . 48 4 I admit that the wording of the tariff is ambiguous, and that your reading is, undoubtedly, correct, minus the note. And, though tho same ambiguity, m a lesser degree, chai'aoterised the previous tariff, uttforbuuately, it hai not only been repeated, but intensified m the present one. Tho opening of the railway to Te Awamutu will, undoubtedly, give a great impetus to that district, still, I am afraid the little advantage you predicate m your note to "Ohaupo's" letter, will not be realised.— l am, &c.,Edwakd Ct.
