NEWCASTLE RATES.
Sin,— Some remarks I made at the lato meeting- of the Waipa County Council appear to have given offence to Mr Thos. Wilson, "ho remarks wore caused by the discussion of how to distribute the funds at tho disposal of the Council— at present about £0 0. The representative for Newcastle proposod that tho sum of £2-50 be made a special graut towards the Whatawhata and Ngaruawahia road. This, I believe was seconded by Mr A\ibin. A grant of £200 was, also, proposed for the Whatawhata and Hamilton road. This did not find a seconder. Also, £150 for a bridge m Whatawhata, which was not sjeouded. To those proposals, I I elicve, I suggested a .special rato for the works moutioued, that thus it might be shown that the ratepayers of the dirtrict were williug to help themselves. lam not sure if I said that thu Newcastle Board always sfruc« a low rate and low valuation, but I did re for to tho rate struck by tho Newcastle ratepayers of i-d pur acre m 1874, when most other highway boards struck 'id per awo . lam much" obliged to Mr Wilson for his figutvs, as they clearly show that they did strike a low rate. As regards the valuation, that always depends ou opinion and ciremmstmnes, and if tht> ratepayers are satisfied I urn quite so. A* far as thu interests of Newcastle aro ooncorucd, fchoy may bo loft with perfect safety ia the hands of its representative, who is fully alive to its interest, and possesses the confidence of the ratepayers. I believe that tho interest of all may bo left with the Council, who will see that nouo are defrauded. With regard to what llv Wilson is pleased to call my impudence, I see no reason why I should bo denied a small portion of that gift so lavishly bestowed on others. — I am, &c, SAM StEBLE.
