HARAPEPE.

November 29. TIIEKE is an. old saying that if you want news of the place you live in you must go away from home to obtain it. The above came into my thoughts at the late Ohaupo cattle sale, as I heard more about the proposed bridge at Te Rore that day at Ohaupo than I woald have heard in a week in the district most concerned about it. I see that the Cambridge correspondent of the 'Herald' seems to know all about it, as he gives the estimated sum it will cost, the amount collected for it, and knows or appears to know how much the Government will give towards it. Now, as the District Road Board do not know any of the above facts (if they are facts), I should like to know where they come from. [The brain of the Cambridge l correspondent.—Ed. W.T.] I have never said much on the subject.in your columns, as at present all is in the future,-and there is nothing settled—not even the site for it, —so it would bo rather a difficult job to, give an estimate. There has not been a pound collected for it, and all the assistance we have at present from the Government takes the form, of promises. The Road Board, some months back, banked £I,OOO. being their share of the £IO,OOO grant to the countios, intending it to go towards the bridge. That is all we have at present, and the bridsre will probably cost . about £3,000. The exact place where the bridge is to be is troubling the minds of several of the residents in its intended neighborhood, and is the. question of the day to some.—There is a mail twice a-week between hero and Alexandra Wednesdays and Saturdays. The present one, via Whatawhata, will cease at the New Tear.—Fine times for the natives now! Those on the Rnglan Road have seven shillings a-day—Government work, —and the Kawhia and Raglan Road is in prospect. Own Correspondent.
