FRIDAY Last was kept as a holiday here, all the principal stores being closed, and a general exodus to Ohaupo took place to attend tha Ohaupo races and review, where all spent a most'enjoyable day. Mr Finch, however, of: the Alexandra Hotel, was an-unfortunate (but the only one, so far as. I have heard), he having lost a valuable mare* which died of inflammation immediately after the return here.

Native news is unimportant. It is said that Tawhiao's great • -meeting in March next will be held at Te Ngakan's place, between: Hangaluki and Whakairoiro, as being the most central and convenient for all the settlements in the conveyance of;the necessary supplies,' &c. I see the ' Herald' affirms that Rewi has now visited a European settlement for the first time since the war. This is con trary to fact, as> Rewi paid a visit to "Major Mair here about two years since, and remained two days, visiting all the stores, public buildings, Sec, and was remarkably affable to everyone, shaking hands with every person he met. Tawhiab is away to Kawhia and Raglan to open the large house erected for him near the Heads, and will most likely pay the township a visit during his stay at the latter placb.' I am just informed that the "Whatawhata cricketers intend doming- here to play a friendly match with our Club on Saturday next.
