RAILWAY V. STEAMER CHARGES.
Sir, — I havo noticed that hardly a -week has passed for some considerable time •without letters being' written in complaint of the extortionate charges of the railway in comparison with other carriers, and only last week a gentlemen, who undoubtedly knew what lie was talking about, could not see the utility of a railway alongside of a navigable river. Now, a oa'se has occurred to mo that illastratcs.tho subject perfectly, and will hliow whether snuh charges against the railway ai g correct. Two months ago, I delivered a double-furrow plough to "the Waikato Steam Navigation Company to be forwarded to Otahuhu. The plough was de" tained in Cambridge a month, and it w-> s only after four journeys, and at last 'a throat of ltiv proosedings, that the plough
was s«nt to its destination. The charge •w" 13s. The plough was sent back by rail through to Ohaupo, and the charge made, including extras was 5s Bd. As these facts speak volumes in themselves,'! think that only one conclusion can be drawn.— l am, &c, A Subscribee.
