REPORTED STOPPAGE OF THE RAGLAN AND WAIPA ROAD.
THE KING CLAIMS THE 1 LAND WEST OF WAIPA. (From our own Correspondent.) •'.; ,-.-•■■' Whatawhata, Monday; ' News, was broughb into Whatawhata on Saturday last, that on the preceding ... day Tv Ta wh iao, the King's son, with several other Hauliau chiefs had i come down to the Kaniwhaniwha.(on the west side of the ; Waipa), for the purpose of stopping the making of the Raglan Road, and this they have done. The ground the natives take is, that the Government having givpn all the land on the western side of the Waipa to Tawhiao, with , the power to permit or otherwise the making of roads through his domain, Tawhiao's permission muat be obtained befoie the Raglan road can be proceeded with, mid this permission will not be granted beforo the forthcoming great meeting at Waitara. < So once again this road is dopnaed to be obstructed and delayed. -At the same time, it is pretty clear proof that the native King has accepted Sir George Grey's ofler, as by this step he has practically taken possession of the lands allotted to him on the West bank of the Waipa. Whether the Premier's conditons, etc. will prove beneficinl to the Waikato, \? a matter of opinion ; certainly the feeling on the Waipa is strongly against it. I scarcely think there caii be "any doubt as to the truthfulness of this report, the facts have been stated by Andrew Barton, who is one of the principal contractors under Government for the construction of this road.
