Awardedito Maclean and Co., New Zealand/ ,: Waikato Grown Quicks.— Mr James Forrest, of Cambridge, announces that he has 250,000 well-grown white thorn fluicks on sale, and at lower prices than last year's rates. They are grown from ! Waikato seed, and from the sample we : saw, are fine strong healthy plants. Mr -Forrest has peculiar facilities for the growth of quicks. The haws have to be gathered and kept ,m certain mixtures for nineteen months' before the seed can be sown, and the principal mixture is the loamy subsoil about Cambridge. The soil there seems to be' the most suitable that could be had for 'the growth of quicks, and this will no doubt account for . the fact of Mr Forrest's yearlings being fully as strong arid large .as the two-year and even throe-year old quicks imported.. Trout Ova. — Wo learn, from Saturday's ' Herald,' that the Acclimatisation •Society have received — per the mail steamer City of Sydney — from San Francisco, . a consignment of eight hundred ova -of the Tahoe trout, the gift of Mr Thomas Russell, CM,. G., who has directed that the whole cost of procuring, packing, and transmitting the ova by steatoer; should Be defrayed by him. This species of trout is said to be one of the finest that inhabit the rivers and j streams of, the Western States and Territories. It is excellent eating, is hardy, and affords capital sport to the ' legitimate angler. It is easily caught with hook and line. We are' glad to learn • that the consignment has been received m excellent condition. The only remaining question will be as to its successful hatching-. The ov.i is at present at the fishhouse m the Acclimatisation Society's Gardens, where it will be hatched out, and then the young fish will be deposited m streams favorable for their nuture Whatever may have been said of the introduction of particular species of birds, the thanks of the public are due, to Mr Russell for this valuable fish. A Self-acting Sewing Machine : — A i Vienna mechanician has recently succeeded,, after many fruitless trials, m constructing a sewing machine which, does not require the person working at ?it to submit to the unpleasant and unhealthy nee'essicy of constant bodily exertion, viz., setting the machine m motion , with . the foot. Since, for pecuniary reasons, the application of electricity, steam, or water power was impossible, the ' inventor of the' new machine was restricted to gravitation or elasticity, and he, preferring the latter force, has contrived to make springs strong enough to keep an ordinary-sized machine m motion , for hours. A system of cog-wheels is arranged underneath the surface of the table upon which the machine is fixed, and by a handle at the side the spring is wound up with the greatest f alicity. The velocity at which the machine works is entirely at the option of the person using ! it, and can be used od libitim,, and m the simplest manner. , A Meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held last night, at which, m the absence of the Mayor, Cr. Hume presided. All other councillors were present. A petition, signed by a large number of ratepayers (97) was presented • by Cr. Pottor, asking that a survey be ; made at that point on i the. river opposite Cook-street on the East side, and Victoriastreet on tho West side, to ascertain I whether or not it would be the most suitable site for the bridge, as affording 1 easier gradients, a better bed across the ■ river, .and more direct communication. A report brought up from the Finance i Committee, respecting the deficiency m the accounts, recommended that the ; matter should be sonsidcred by a committee of 'the whole Council, which precludes L the public from learning »the particulars i of the afiair, as the Oouncil m committee : excludes strangers and the Press. . The balance at the bank was stated as being £35 Os 9d. Tenders for selling lease of the punt were r received : — J. D. &K. Hill, £6 ss ; John r Knox, £2 2s. The question of the petition > was then referred to, and 1 Cr/ Potter [ stated that if the allegations of the peti- • tion were proved the petitioners had | very good reason to ask that their case . should be carefully considered. On the motion of Cr. Potter, seconded by Cr. Dawson, the petition was received and ordered to be laid on the table. On the [ motion of Cr. Potter, seconded by Cr. \ Cox, the petition was referred to the ' Work's Committee. Cr. Potter obtained ' leave to suspend the standing orders m | order to. bring forward a motion petition- ■ ing the Government to make the bridge ' r at Hamilton a free bridge., He then [ moved, and Cr. Gardiner seconded, a motion to that effect. Cr. Gwynne thought that as the Government proposed ■ giving the town allotments to the Maoris, ■ they ought at least to build]a bridge for the ! Borough, which would benefit the whole ; North Island as much as Hamilton. Cr. ' Cox feared that if the Government built 1 a free bridge they would, build it where they : and not the inhabitants desired. ■Or. Hume agreed with the motion, but ; thought there should be no delay m getting on with the plans, &c, of the proposed bridge. -A committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Hume, Cox, Gaudin, Beale, ■ and the 'mover was"' ordered to carry out the motion. Gi 1 , Potter drew attention to tho want of gravpl supplied for the roads, which were boiug 1 destroyed for want of metal. It was ordered that tlO supply of gravel be tendered for. A motion to pay auditors' fees, not exceeding a guinea each for each audit, was carried. ■■.■■■ . Consolation.— inebriate : 'Now, look here, what.l sh y is, what the use o' rtehes ?
