Sir,— Will you allow mo space for a final word— at least, final on my side— in reference to the subject of Mr G. T. Clark's letter, which appears in' your columns this morning, anent the Dog Tax revenue of this district. In my capacity as Chairman of the Highway; Trustees of Cambridge North, and m conducting the correspondence, , I have been simply the mouthpiece of a Board wliich, with the exception of the one respected member of it who sits also m the County Council, has been unanimous m. rejecting the demands of that body. Why I should, as a consequence, have been selected personally as the mark upon whioh the Council and Mr ' Clark are to pour out their vials is inexplicable, .except perhaps on the presumption of conscjous weakness on their side, Avhen abuse . of opponent's attorney, is the last— -not' very commendable and sometimes even dangerous — resource; My letter, which yon were land, enough to publish, was guardedly free from personalities—^pointing to the County ■Council only. Mr Clark's letter is altogether and intensely personal, ignoring the Town Board, whereas the whole dispute is between these two separate .bodies. One mischievous and unruly, but not illtempered, thought arises, and will insist upon finding expression, Mr Editor. Is it possible that Air Clark's letter is intended as a starting address (I do not say cheap advertisement) to his constituents, anticipating his position m November next ? Is it ,an attempt to blow upon a possible opponent while exalting his own virtues. — I am, etc., William Ciahe. Cambridge, May 21, .1878." „:..'
