PROSECUTION OR PERSECUTION?

Sib,— Your report m Tuesday's issue of the "Waikato Times was totally correct with the exception of where Lewis m cross-examination says " he had examined the spot with his glass " ; what he did say ■was "he had not examined the spot with his glass," which makes all the difference. But the object of 'this letter is to state what took place when the Court adjourned after the case for the pro.iecutiou had been heard. My solicitor proposed we should have a look at the skin of the condemned sheep. Mr Barstow, R.M.,the solicitors for tne defence and prosecution, l^yis, the prosecutor, Mr John Ruuciman, the Waikato, .bheep Inspector, Fred. Howard, Clayton, Short, myself, and others formed a. group round the skin spread on the floor m the Police Court. • Mr Lewis, the prosecutor, stooped down to examine the skin. After a prolonged examination, and not finding the large patch on the shoulder with other | alleged sure symptoms ( of the disease ! which he had previously testified to, he suddenly turned to Clayton, and changed him with changing the skin. When the Court ! again .'met, the slaughterman deposed that the said s kin was the identical one Lewis had picked out from a heap m the. slaughterhouse as condemned, and the same that was marked by himself. Let eveyone form their own judgment from these facts!— l am,&c.j Thomas Jolly. -4 — ; •: ■
