CAMBRIDGE FARMERS' CLUB.
A meeting of the Farmers' Club was held at the Club House, May 4, 1878, at 2 p.m. Present : Messrs E. Maclean (President,' in the chair), William Marty n, G. E. Clark, H. Reynolds, John Hunt, A. A. Fautham, Jas. Runciman, F. J. Brooks, 11. Buttle, and Captain Steele. The minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, The Club went into committee to revise the rules. The.principal alterations made ■were, that the (Jlub meet every first Monday before the full moon, and the annual subscription be again reduced to a guinea. On the motion of N: r r F.wstilvsi, Mr Hunt seconding, it was resolved to have the rules printed and a copy given to each member. AZvSVXL AfiBICULTUJRAL SJIOAV. Mr Claiuc proposed, m accordance -with notice given at last mooting, "Tliattho folio-wing gentlemen form a committee to make arrangements for the annual cattle shi.iw of 1378, "with power to add to their nuiulit-'i 1 , namely — Messrs 11. H. D. Fevjyu -won, Edwa fd Lake, Henry Reynolds. AYilJiiim Martyu, .i. S. Bucldand, John Fishor, X B. Walker, James Runciman, G-. E. Clark, and Henry Buttle." Mr Buttle said that, before ho ahWcd his name to appear on tho list, he would like to know whether the proposed committee will bring all their arrangements before the Club for approval. He thought it a farce to appoint a committee which had to submit to the Club for approval every little detail of business -which it might wish to carry out. This would provoke hours and hours of discussion, and it would bo- much better to leave the business wholly m tho hands of the committee. If the Club could not trust the gentlemen nominated as a committee, let tli em put m men they could trust. He did liot believe m a committee beinghampered. Mr Faxthasi said he never hoard of a sub-committee which did not submit its arrangements for approval to the body to ■which it belonged. Five or six. gentlemen only might bo present at a committee meeting, and might carry measures which could, be greatly improved upon by :
the general body. The prize list find the appointment of judges should most decidedly receive the Club's approval. Ho did not think that any committee luid the power to voto the money of the Club for any purpose -without previously obtaining the consent of the Club. Mr Claekr said it was a mistake to suppore that th« Club spent one shilling on the cat bio show. It was under the auspices of the Club, but the public provided the nionoy. M<j thought it would be Aviso to s ibmit the prize Us'; to the Club for approval, but the appointment < f judges should be left to the committee. I hey had vjry great difficulty m getting suitable judges last yea i\ They had tried to get all the | judges fam the south, and one whom they had depended upon, at the last moment disappointed them ; they had, therefore, to fall back on soveral local men. Mr Jas. ExrxN-ciiLVK quite agreed with Mr Clarke, and if the committee had to submit every little matter of detail to the Club, he would not allow himself to be nominated on the committee. Captain Steele thought it much more desirable that the appointment of judges should be confirmed by the Club than that the prize list should be submitted for approval. He would suggest that six suitable gentlemen for each claes be written to, and asked if they would bo willing to act as judges if appointed, by the club. Then the Club could appoint them ont of the six for each class. Mr William Mabtyn quite agreed with Captain Steele with regard to the prize list, but m the matter of judges the plan would not do at all. For if three out of the six men were appointed, and one at the last moment femnd it impcauble to come, none of the other three who had been rejecte.lin the fh\3t instance would cous3nt to act. Mr Clakke thought it would be perfectly safe to leave it m the hands of the Club. Mr Fantiiajc raid that if any of the gentlemen nominated as judges could not aot, then the matter might be left to the committee. But he objected to the words m Mr Clark'.-* resolution " with power to add to their nronber." He thought that meant nothing else than giving- them power to put a friend on the committee. If they wanted more men on the committee let them be put on now, or let them go to th« Club for them. A subcommittee was [appointed the other day, and two gentlemen were standing* outside. By-and-bye out csnu one of the coinmitteemen, and tapped one of the gentlemen on the shoulder, and said he had just been put on the committe?. Now why was not the other one put on too ? Pie regarded it as a slur upon the other man. He would move as an amendment that the words " with power to add to their number " be struck out of Mr Clarke's proposition. Mr Huxt seconded. The Pbesidext then put Mr Clarke's motion to the meeting as far as the words ;c with power to add to theii: number," which was carried iiuumimously. He then put it to the meeting whether the committe should have power to add to their number. Aye.? 6; no r i, 3, He therefore declared Mr Clarke's original motion carried. NOTICES OF MOTION. Notice was given of one gentleman's name to bo proposed as a member at nextmeeting-. Mr Hekky Buttle gave notice that at the next meeting, of the Club he would move that the next Annual Agricultural Slioav be held at Hamilton. The President then left the chair.
