THE MESSRS MAGLEAN'S PRIZE BULLS.
' Glydesdalk ' m the ' Town and Country Journal ' has the following flattering notice of New Zealand enterprise ;— "Our cattle prohibitionists have just now a capital opportunity of seeing what they have been turning their backs on if they will interview a trio of bulls at the stables, Blighstreet, that have just arrived from New Zealand, and will be shown at the Exhibition. They are property' of Messrs. Maclean and Co., a large pastoral firm m New Zealand, who iiave bred those fine annimals from bu'ls and cows imported from England during tho time we hr r vc had our ports closed ; and I take leave to think they furnish a most striking illustration of the superiority of the New Zealand judgment to that of New South Wales. I don't know when I've seen two finer bulls than Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Newcastle ; and iSouwrsefc js a, yevy line calf. Duke of Cambridge is a flatus upqn-Knightly bull— a very fashionable strain; his dam, Lady Eleanor, was a prize-taker at the West of England shows at Taunton and Exter: and his sire, 25th Baron
AVetherby. comes -of the clebrited j Siddington tribe of purs Bates, the property of Mr Bjwlay. Cambridge is a light roan bull, and will be four years old m June; got by 25th Baron Wetherby (27,981); dam Lady Eleanor by .Duke of Somerset (28,012); g. d. Bloomer by Conquorer (21,466) 3rd d. Anemone s:h, by Waterloo; 4th d. Anemone by Allan-a-dale ; sth d. Ultima by Little John ; 6th d. by Marcel lus ; 7th d. by Caliph ; Bth il. by Spring ; Oth d. by Argus ; 10th d. by Defender; 1 Hh d. by Petrarch. He is an exceedingly massive bull, with great thickness through and immense depth, with capital underline, good spring of the rib, and very evel back. His full brisket comes down nearly to the ground, and he is literally " beef all over." He is excellent behind tht shoulder and over the crops, with grand loin rumps, evenly fleshed all over, and splendid handler. .Standing before or behind him, or broadside on, he looks equally well, for he's as great m the twist as m the brisket; and is exceptionally good along the ribs, right back to die hocks; being also, an immense length from hip to the tail, and remarkably level, and well filled with beef. Such is the Duke of Cambridge. One of his companions, the Duke of Newcastle, a rich roan, was calved m November, 1875 ; got by Oth Colonel Tregunter, dam Countess of Taunton by Duke of Somerset (26,012) ; g.d. Windsor's Ist by Red Wiudsor (24,926) ; 3rd d. Crocus by Henry Ist (26,370) ; 4th d. Cowslip by Saladin ; 3th d. Splendour by Chaffcutter ; 6th d. Wharton Lady by Gaiuford 2nd ; 7th d. Moss Rose by Whavton ; Bth d. by Count; 2th d. by Sir William ; 10th by Young Bockbampton; 11th d. by .Wellington. This is a pure Bates peJigree of great excellence ; his sire, Oth Colonel Tregunter, was out of a Siddington cow, Duchess 94th, and has an unbroken line of thirteen Duchesses m his pedigree Duke of Newcastle is a remarkable taking bull, of splendid roan color and the first thing one notions is his beautiful head, with short well-shaped horn, and the genteel setting of the head by a well-shaped neck. He is an immense thickness through, both over and under, especially good beneath the shoulders, very big for his age, exceedingly light of bone evenly fleshed, and with plenty of hair. He has a noble carriage, and I don't remember ever seeing a bull with more character about him than this one. It's very seldom, too, one sees Bates cattle so good behind the shoulder as he is. Mr Payne, who has brought these beasts over, is very proud of them, and 19 glad for any-one to see them between 2 aud 4 o'clock every afternoon. The white calf Somerset will bo two years old m August, and he is by Duke of Cambridge, dam Baroness of Taunton, by 25 th Baron Wetherby, grand dam Countess of Taunton, by Duke of Somerset ; the same strains and combination as are found iv the pedigree of Duke of Cambridge. I think he's the materials of a good bull ; but, alongside companions of such super-excellence as Cambridge and Newcastle, he is not extensively noticed by visitors. I strongly recommend all lovers of good cattle to see these New Zealanders, — Clydesdale."
