WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING.

A special moeting of the above f was held at the Council Chamber; Hamilton Euflt, at 2 p.m. on Saturday last. Present : F 1\ Cmude (Chairman), Councillors Clarke, Kirkwood, CutnmW. and WhU B

The Chairman stated that the meeting had bet-n called in accordancewith Clause 134 of the Countias Act, 1876; ior the purpose of considering and: passing the County accounts for the half-year ended 31st March last.; to open tenders .received for the extension westward of the Piako Swamp road; and to rc-consider the mutter of fees fixed ; by the Council to be charged''for the slaughtering of cattle within the County. The Chairman fur. ther intimated that the Government subsidy to the Council for the half-year ending 30th June next had been received, but as several accounts were outstanding, he proposed, to ddfor the consideration an.l appropriation of the unexpended balance .-till the ordinary, meeting on the 25th inst. ' ; «. ••

The Treasurer then read the accounts for the half-year ended 31at March last, which showed an expenditure on—

. .. JLUbctl ... ~, o/ o Q The income consisted of a sum of 10s, received from the Clerk of the Licensing Court, arid an overdraft from' the Bank of Now Zealand of £B6 18s 6J. The accounts/on ; the notion of Councillor Cuaiuring, seconded by Councillor: Kirk wood, were passed, and signed by the Ciiairman.

The fallowing tenders for the formation of two miles of road at the western side of the Piako Swamp, were opened by the Chairman, and submitted for the consideration of the Council—viz. :

' The tender of J Smith being the lowest (and the tender being considered eligible in ever'respect) -was accepted, on the motion of Cr Clarke, seconded by Cr Kirk wood. »;/.'•" _■. >7 fT *~-- ,

A communication, in reference to his slaughter-house, was read from Air Potter, and it was* resolved, -'that a'com-: inittee of the-Council, consisting of the Chairman, with,, Crs Cumming and Whyte, ; be appointed to inspect the new site proposed by Mr Potter, and if they approve that, a license be granted. ; in the meantime,' it was agreed that a temporary license, for one month, be granted to Mr Potter, on application, to slaughter cattlj at bis old premises, known.as Gibbons' Flax Mill, at Hamilton. An application for a liceuse _to slaughter cattle at Cambridge, was received from Mr Heaslip, and the Council unanimously decided not to grant it. The Clerk was instructed to notify acordingly. Agreeable to.notice given at last meetin?, Councillor Whyte introduced the subject of altering the fees fixed by the Council, to be charged for slaughtering cattle within the County. He suggested that Is per head for cattle, 6d for calves, and 3d lor sheep would, in his opinion, be a sufficient tax to cover the expense necessary to carry out the. provisions of the County By-laws. < -' To enable the Council to deal with the question in accordance with law, as laid down in clause 78 of the Counties Act, Councillor Cummiug moved —' That the re-consideration of the matter of daughter-house fees be deferred till next meeting, on tho 25th inst.,' which, being seconded by Councidor Clarke, was unanimously agreed to.

Councillor Clarke proposed—' That id future the ordinary meetings of the Council be held at 11 a.m, instead of 3 p.m.'
