At a. meeting of the Trustees held subsequently, Mr J H Smith was elected chairman. The following is tho report above alluded to. Annual Report of tlw Trustees of tbo Highway District ior tho jcar 1876. The retiring Trustees ii pvesonlinp their report, desire to call the attention of tut ratepnjers to the fact, that owing to the immense damage oauied by the gre&t flood of Usb Deoeinber, a largo portion of ths rates, haro been exprnded ou what maj, at fint light, appear to bo unpiofitablo works. We allude more parti-
cularly to the culvert opposite Mr Redgrave's, tin washing away of which, ha* entailed npom the district an expenditure of something Hit* L. Immediately after the old culvert had bun destroyed, the board took steps to maintain th» thoroughfare, and stationed a night watohma* to prevent any accident occuring. As loon ft* practicable, the Board, not feeling justified in dealing with the matter, themselves obtained the eerrioefl of Mr W fl Clarke, 0 E, who visited the epot and tent in report, and estimate! for tht construction of a now culvert. t , M ' Clarkes estimate for the plan preferred by the Board being L 192 erolusive of the charges for superintendence which womld hare beem necessary had his plan been exoepted, and this being altogether beyond their resources, the Board decided to adopt a modification of it, and called for tenders. The Tenders being all too high the Board resolved to appoint a foreman of works and employ day labour: The work was completed with as much dispatoh and economy as possible. Notwithstanding this great and unavoidable outUy, the Board have during the past year, gravelled about a mile of road between Mr Reynold's farm and the town belt. They have constructed a bridge, and approaches thereto, over the creek adjoining the property of Messrs McLean k (k, at whjch place a further expenditure will be necessary. The Trustees hare also, in so far as circumstances permit led, opened up communication with the outskirts of the distriot. They have alto given attention to keeping the main road from Hamilton in proper repairs the cuttings near Messrs Leslie's Crawfords and Marty n't having shared in (he ill efect of the late flood. During the past year the Government have fulfilled their promts* made'to the last Board. They have removed the old bridge at Martyn'a Creek which had long been in a decaying state, and have substituted a stone culvert and oarth roadway. Had this work been undertaken by the Board, it would have required.considerably more than a year's <ates. The Trustees desire to congratulate the district upon the completion of this work and lo express their satisfaction at the very effioient manner in which it had been executed by the Armed Constabulary. Tho trustees desire to express their regrttthafc they have not been able to do more for .«• Southern side of the distriot, at the same twfc they feel very strongly that it would be desirable vf the settlers on the other side of the Karapera creek would take steps to amalgamate witk the Taotaoroa district.
