NGARUAWAHIA AMATEUR CONCERT.
Another «£ those amateur concerts whioh seem "to be so highly appreciated by the residents in and about here, was held at the Government Buildings last night. Considering that so short a time has elapsed -since the last -concert, the numbers that attended shew that a superior class of entertainment, will always command good audiences in Ngaruawatiia. The thanks of the community are certainly due to the committee, but, that some of our really good voices were nat brought forward, seems to be a mistake. There were many there <wfco could have listened to the " Hymn of the Moravian Nuns" again, er to "Fairy Bells " with pleasure, also a jovial bass singer who heretofore was always ready with a song was absent. It is to be hoped that at an early date we may again hear their voices. Another omission on the part of the committee was that although their programme said"" dancing/ 1 they provided no music for those who would have much enjoyed a step ; however a few volunteers turned up at the required time to play. The programme opened with " Hail Smiling Morn," sung well, in full voice. Next came an instrumental duet, " Home Sweet Home" with variations, which was capitally given, and secured great
applause. Trio, "Fairies," by threa ladies was also well sung. Song, "We may be happy yet," was rendered in a fall rich voice, and well received by the audience. Duet, " Wind and Harp " came in for the applaase which its beautiful execution entitled it to. Next came w Paddy's Enlistment," by <be Waikato Corkonian, but the loud encores which this song called forth were to no purpose, for this time at least. Next a reading from Mauncy Waugh, " Watching tho resurrectionists," was exceedingly well given and appreciated. Tfae first part of the programme was brought to a close by the glee, "See our oars," and polka Chorus. The latter quite took the audience by supprise being sung in saoh a spirited manner. The second part opened with an instrumental trio, — piano, violinand comet,-^fche " Edinbro* Quadrilles," fcfeis wag certainly the best piece of maaic that was played during the evening. The playing of the "Blue Bells of Scotland" was really exquisite. Glee, "Foresters Sound tbo Bugle Horn," was rendered with * marked improvement on last time. Tbo ■duet "Oh ! Albion," was sung in * masterly manner, a slight timidity wai noticeable in the younger singer, but the ■enior folly made np for Anything that was lacking. Ooraic song, " It's nice to be a father " was loudly encored, as it well deserved, which wa3 responded too witk " Ring the Bell. 1 ' Now came the song of the evening, " Tapping at the Gardesi Gate," which was encored, and most good humouredlly responded to. This ii th« second time that this singer has come a long distancetoassistatonr entertainments. Comic aong, ** Love amongst the roses," and the " Volunteer Rifle Brigade," were very well Bang by a gentleman who although living some seven miles away is always foremost to forward our tastes when musically inclined. Then came the 11 Man from Cork " right in his illimint, with two songs, after which il Calm be thy slnrabers " closed an evenings amuse ment that could not be rivalled for taste on the part of the performers and due appreciation from the audience. — (From ax OCCASIONAL CORRESPONDENT.)
