THE CATTLE STEALING CASE. LATEST PARTICULARS. Alexandra, Nov 3rd.
Considerable excitement has been caused at Alexandra by the recent arrest and escape of James Soott, a farmer residing at Ngahinepouri. It would appear that for sometime past, the settlers in that neighbourhood have missed cattle, but no suspicions were aroused against any pc; 3D in particular. One settler missed as ma ny as 24 head of cattle out of 30, but it was supposed that they were lost in the swamps A few days mgo an information was kid against Jamet Scott by Mr Vickers, charging him with stealing a beast of his, and sergeant Castles and a constable were despatched to Ngahinepouri to arrest him. The constable apprehended his man, but Scott requested to be permitted to change his clothes, which he was allowed to do, the sergeant and the constable meanwhile keeping watch over him. His horse was then saddled, but before starting, Scott informed sergeant Castles that he could produce <\ocumen.ta , from the house to prove the purchase 6f cattle' which he. wai accused of stealing, and he waa permitted to go into the house to get the papers, the s«rgeanfc and the constable keeping watch at the front door. After the lapse of a few minutes a noise was heard from inside resembling the violent shutting of a door, and search being made for Scott, he was nowhere to be found. Sergeant Castles then remained on watch, while the constable mounted his horse and scoiired the neighbourhood in search of the prisoner, but he had disappeared. He is supposed to have run out by the back and across an open apace into a ravine. The sergeant remained on the look-out for several hours while a deligent search was made, but without success. In the house were found the entries of the brands of over 150 head of cattle, and it is said that Scott possesses property worth nearly £3,000. Sergeant Castles proceeded to Hamilton to-day, T understand to attend an inquiry on the matter.—OwN CorbesPOXD ENT.
