ENTERTAINMENT AT KIHIKIHI. Kihikihi, Nor. 3rd, 1875.
Th« second part only of the pro 7 rarum», in the entertainment in aid of the funds for icbool prixf ■ and pic-nic, cams off on Friday erenin g. The jurinileg' great fun, the illuminated tableaux and fairy scenes were not produced, ia consequence of the non-receipt of the blue lights, which, although duly delivered for transmission at Quick's coach office in Auckland, on the Monday previous, hare not yet been heard of. The disappointment was really moat unpleasant in an otherwise successful and agreeable evening's en* terlainment. The floral and artistic get-up of the stage wai admirable. The green and silvery bowers seemed the very ideal of an abode of Fairy Kings and Queens and ar iel spirits of that genii. Miss Mandeno presided at the harmonium, and gracefully and efficiently sustained her parh during the evening, assisted by lady vocalists, Mrs Macintosh and Miss Allen. The gentlemen singers who deserve honorable mention, and who were highly applauded in their respective parts, were Messrs F C Smith, Rothery, Mandeno, Steel, and Davy. Mr R .Roches eoinio was amusing » and Mr Simpson'i recitation was a atirring and lively performance. The musicians, members of the A 0 were most efficient, and contributed in a great measure to the success of the evoning. The singing of the National Anthem by the audience was the signal for the dance, which was kept up with right good will and animation until daylight. By way of making amends for the partial failure of the programme, the Committee have decided to give another entertainment, gratis, in a month henco, whsn the Illuminated Tableux and Fairy scones will bo produced.
How THiY do Things i* llou \wn — Puring the hearing of a cause bofon* Ju.l»««» Kontou yesterday, the question arose umlcr what head m brewer should be clas-wd in rpfcrcnoo to expenses for attendance at Court. The Court held that a brewer could certainly not ho classed as a laborer, nor a professional mttn, and afv«r mature deliberation awarded ton ah tiling! expense! to the witness as a tradesman, adding, as a gratuitous piece of oonsolation, a remark that if the reoipient of the ton shillings was not sufficiently compensated for loss of time, it would be a warning to him in future not to grant such lons credits. The Bench then referred to the blissful relations existing between tradesmen and their customers in some part of Holland, whire no credit ia giren for anjthing under £50, ( aad where there are none of these suits for tho recovery of debts. At another stage of the pi^ooeedings. when a witness pleaded th« liability of humanity to errors in the transactions of daily life, his Honour remarked that if strict aoouiraoy were possible there would be no necessity ior lawyers an 1 Courts, and a rery estimable set o f men, (of wh^m he was one,) would be without occupatioa.
