A meeting of settler* was held in the Delta Hotel, Ngaraawahia, or* Saturday afternoon, for the purpose of considering the moit effectual method of obtaining an Educational Reserve*'for the District of Ngaruawahia. On the motion of Mr Edgecumbe, Major Wilson was voted to the chair. The Chairman read the advertisement convening the meeting, and said that in March 1872 a petition was sent to the Government from the settlers of this district, asking for 200 acres of , suburban land as an endowment for educational purposes. An answer was received from Mr Cooper, stating that the Government had no legal power to grant such an endowment, and referring the matter back to the private enterprise of the settlers. 'He (the chairman) thought Mr Cooper's answer was' illogical, and unsatisfactory ; this was not a matter for private enterprise, and if the Government had legal powers to grant land for a race course as had been done in many parts of the colony; be could not tee why land should not be granted for so useful a purpose as Education. A grant of 200 acres could be let on An improving lease, and in five or seven years would return a sufficient income to maintain a school ; now was the time to try again, a general election was coming on, and
