Letters to the Editor. EDUCATION MATTERS IN THE WAIKATO.
Sib, — It being most desirable, for the sake of those who are liable f r Education Rutes, that the position of those who refuse or delay payments should be generally known, I desire t^ place the following facts before your readers : - 1. The School Committee of each district is alone authorised by the Law to recommend for exemption from payment of the Kates persons believed by them to be "through poverty" unable to pay, and these recommendations are always gi/en elFect to. There is no other way of procuring exemption. 2. Persons liable, who do not pay and hare not b^een exempt, are not sued for a debt, but are brought before the Policr-Couit fora brench of the law and fined in the Bute due and costs, and unless that* is paid, or recovered under a distress warrant, they are liable to imorisonment with hard labour. | 3. As Receiver of the°o rates it is my duty to use nil the means provided by Liw to obtain payment from every person liable and able to pay them ; and I desire, for the sake of the ratepayers, that it should be fully known that the necessary proceedings will speedily be taken to compel pnymeut by all who can pay but do n»t. — I am, &c, R. ft.
