WILLIAMSON TESTIMONIAL FUND. To the Editor of the Waikato Times
Sir, — In your issue of to-day, I read a letter signed •• Settler," in which he whines most pitiously because there was not a large gathering of s ttlers at the meeting in aid of the above fund. Now, however much we all teel the loss of the late Superintendent, and deeply sympathise with his widow, I do not think that we are bound to assiht her for what the late Mr Williamson did or intended to do for this portion oi the Province : but out of regard for her position, I will gladly contribute my mite. Your correspondent says " the best portion of the late Superintendent's life was devoted to the interests of the Province and, consequently, neglect of hip own commercial affairs." As a thinking man — a family man — and a struggling colonist, I think he did wrong to his wife and family. If all our politicians were to do the same ~ that is let business go to the dogs, for the sake of politics, we should very soon, I take it, be in a state of hopeless impecuniosity, and when the head of the family died, the public would be called upon to help his family, left in poverty, owing to the husband's improvidence and neglect. — Yours, <3fcc., Working Man. Cambridge, April 8.
