CATTLE. Judges : Messrs Proud and Bassett.
For quality no settler in the Waikato could have cause to blush at the exhibits of horned cattle, it is to be regretted, however; that the names of some of our leading breeders were absent from the list of exhibitors. The first prize offered was for Shorthorn; Bulls: — There were three entries, and the first prize was awarded to Messrs Gubbins for the same bull that brought the first prize from Auckland tSb the "Waikato^. he was so honestly superior to theHwo animals shown against him, that the awarding of the first prize cannot have caused the- Judges a moment's thought. He is certainly a fine animal, and reflects credit on his owners, both for their enterprise and judgment. The second prize was taken by Mr Ramsay, with an animal which, in the absence of his noble competitor, might have attracted some notice, and deservedly. There was another bull shown, but what object his owners could have had in doing so unless it was to show the difference between the animals that once satisfied the settlers in the Waikaro and those appreciated in the present day. Hereford Bull. — There were only two entries for the prizes and each took one. Mr J. 11. Scott was awarded the first and Mr Germann the second, both animals showed excellent points, and were decided no discredit to their ancestors. Bull, under 2 years. — There were only two entries, the prize was awarded to Mr Taylor, for an animal that promises to add at some future day to the quality of our cattle. The other entry, the name of the owner we were unable to ascertain, in our opinion, was, u'orthy of high commendation as there was no second prize offered. Shorthorn Cow- — Messrs Gubbins took the first prize, with a very long and roomy animal, with strong evidence of purity of breed. Mr Ricketts took the second prize. There were nine entries. Hereford Cow. — For this prize there were only two entries, to each a prize was given. Mr J. H. Scott took the first, and Mr Bruce the second. The scarcity of entries in this class goes far to show that settlers endorse our opinion as to the breed, the expression of which last year brought down upon us the thunder and lightning of a well known breeder. Heifer, 2 to 3 years. — There were eight entries for the prizes. Mr Kicketfcs took the first, and Mr Gubbins the second, an animal ot Mr Storey's being highly commended. We have seldom seen a finer lot of young animals yarded than competed in this class. Heifer, 1 to 2 years. — Eight entries. Mr Ramsay first prize, and Mr Fleming second. Calf, under 1 year. — Messrs Gubbins took the first prize and Mr Storey second. Fat Ox — Mr Seccombe took the first prize and another animal of the same owner was highly commended. There were four other entries. Fat Cow — Messrs Gnbbins took the prize from four other competitors.
