FIRE IN AUCKLAND.

A »estbuctive fire occurred in Queen street at 6 p.m on Saturday last. The fire originated in Mr King's premises, just^below Vaile's buildings. After the first outburst there was a cessation of anxiety, as the smoke ceased to rise from the premises . la a very short time, however, flames broke through the centre of the house, and burnt so rapidly that Mr King was unable to save any of his property. Mr King's house was one of the few ancient wooden structures that are always readj to take fire on- the slightest orovocation. It is needless to say that there was a scarcity of water ; only sufficient to supply bhe engines for ten minutes. The tire was checked on one side by Messrs Vai'e's brick building, and on the other by that of the D.S. Cross office. The following is a list of the buildings destroyed, the estimated loss-of each sufferer, and the amount of insurance, as given by the N.Z. Herald .- — William Goodfellow, six buildings, valued at £ISOO. Insured in thn Norwich Union for £700, and in the Scottish Commercial for £500. Total insurance, £120 >. William Marshall, fruiterer, stock and furniture estimated at £200. Insured in the Koyar for £100-. James King, chemist, stock insured in the New Zealand for £800. &. Eedfern, photographer, insured in the New Zealand for £100. 0. Cleal, hairdresser,, loss, £100 uninsured. Reuben's oyster saloon, loss, £100, uninsured. Seymour, fruiterer, «tock and furniture, lost, £300. Insured for £200 in the New Zealand. Townshend's Canterbury store. Stock valued at £600. Insured in the New Zealand for £500. W. J. Hurst and Co. Estimated loss on stock, £1000. Insured for £700 in the Victoria There me of course consequential damages of minon import which the companies will have to pay.
