RIFLE MATCH
A Rifle Matjch, which liiu been for som? time fn> contemplation, between sir civilians and six of the Waikato Eiflo Volunteers, came off an Saturday, th> 18th inst, at the butts. The clay was not a good one, being rather stormy and dull, which may account for some- of the meagre scores made. The teams were on the ground at 1 o'cloclt, and shortly after «ot to work, tlic volunteer! from the very first ■provine that they had it all tlieirown way. The ranges were '100, 500>, and 600 yurdi, 7 shoti at each. The scores wore :—: —
The volunteers thin won by 144 point*. Volunteer Coleman's scoring at the 500 and GOO yards range was exceptionally good. As the match vvai got up for ft dinner, the < tarns, with the markers and a few friends, sat down in the evening to an excellent repast, prepared by Host Harper, of the Hamilton Hotel. Captain McDonald occupied the chair, and Mr E. Mason the vice-chair. Th« usual loyal and patriotic tonits were given and inoit heartily responded to, and a most pleasant evening spent, every one feeling reluctant to part; hut Auld Lang Syne aud the National Anthem were ut last oung, and all retired to their respective homes expressing fervent hopes that such social and pleasant meetings might in future be more frequent. A return match it intended.
