BOROUGH BRIEFS.
The Chamber of Commerce is to meet to-morrow night for the transaction of important special business.
The s.s. “Waiotapu” is to load at Canadian and U.S.A. Pacific Coast ports, during April, for various New Zealand ports, including Napier.
The Waipukurau Brass Band is to render a programme of music at the P.orangahau, and .MakaTCtu sports, to be held on the 25th dnst. and 9th prox., respectively.
A cold . snap was experienced in Waipukurau and district yesterday, being in. marked contrast to tions obtaining previously for many weeks. •
The weather to-day is delightfully bright, but there, will be general disappointment that the threatening condition of the elements on several occasions of late has not fulfilled the expectation of a downpour of much needed rain.
The town was, as usual, well filled with visitors yesterday, despite the unfavourable -weather prevailing—cold and somewhat windy. The day had, naturally, .an adverse effect upon special Summer shopping activities, but the general business was satisfactory.
A list of the famous pianos obtainable from Wood’s Music Depot, appears in the advertising columns of this issue. The instruments are representative of the world’s most reputable makers. ~
The fast new motor. vessel, the “Port Fremantle, <’ is to sail from London on May ISth, and will include Napier as a port for the discharge of cargo. This direct service will save transhipping expenses. The H.B. Farmers’ Co-operative Association has the agency for this steamer.
Nurse Rood, in charge of the local School Dental Clinic, acknowledges receipt of a donation of £1 from Mrs F. V. Ward. An earlier donation of £l 1/- from Mr R. W. Carpenter indicates that the valuable services being rendered to the children are meeting with appreciation. At no cost to parents, scholars up to Standard 111. are receiving dental • attention, and these continue on the list .until the end of their school days.
The Borough Council at a meeting held last night, passed a resolution by way of special., order enabling the raising of a ldan.„of £5OO for the Reservoir Road extension. contract, in terms of the Local Authorities Empowering (Relief of Unemployment) Act, 1920. The work is in state of completion and good progress is now being made with the- McLean Road intersection with Reservoir Road.
As yet, there is but little stir, in anticipation of the biennial municipal elections, and the indications at the moment are that the contest for Mayor, positions on the Council, Harbour Board, Hospital Board, and Power Board, will not evoke very keen competition. For the Fire Board—two Borough representatives instead of three —there will be no public election, as the matter is in the.hands of z the' Council. \ Autumn Modes front the most exclusive London and Parisian designers.
