POLAR EXPLORATION.

0 Both the North and South Poles aae to be attacked thts year by French expeditions, that of Dr Charcot, which is due to leave in July for the Antarctic, being remarkable for the completeness of its equipment. The North Polar expedition, although projected later than that for the South Pole, has already left for the Arctic, under the command of Captain Charles Benard, a retired naval officer. His vessel, the Jacques Cartier, has, like the Discovery and the Pram, been specially constructed to withstand great ice pressure. France has done very little towards the quest of the North Pole since D’Urville reached latitude 66 in 1840, but the Benard expedition is full' of hope that the tricolour will be the first flag unfurled at the northern apex of our globe.
