The’ Frisco Fires.

—o — Forty looters have been shot. About a fourth of the city will be saved —chiefly suburbs. The best and richest sections of the city have been destroyed. Several men engaged in collecting the bodies of women, cut the fingers and pocketed the rings. They were caught in the act and shot- . General Funston reports that the fire is not progressing west ot Van Ness-avenue, A westerly wind has arisen, and it is likely that the city south of Van NessAvenue will be destroyed. It is impossible to establish sanitary conditions immediately and much sickness is expected. President Roosevelt says outside assistance is not necessary. The streets are littered with hundreds of bodies- Citizens have been compelled by force to assist in the burial of the dead. The rich people are flying to the bay- The poor in the city remain, as they are unable to meet the boatmen’s exorbitant demands. Wednesday’s earthquakes were felt very severely north of San Francisco, the havoc extending in that direction a hundred and twenty miles. Two men were shot in a park for insulting women. Santa Rosa, containing about seven thousand people, was destroyed. Terrible loss of life occurred. One thousand bodies have already been recovered. The earthquake shocks were felt at Los Angeles, Honolulu, Bosua (Kansas), and Manila.
