"Knock-Outs."
— o — At the Collingwood police court recently, John O’Neil,a dealer, was charged with “ administering a noxious thing to one Thomas Utting, with intent to. annoy him.” The medical evidence showed that the “thing” in question consisted of a powder containing over J 2 grains of tartar emetic, and medical evidence was called to show that this dose exceeded the limit of safety by 10grams. Uuing was drunk at the time, ana took the medicine on O’Neil’s sugges ion to “ straighten him up.” For doing so O’Neil gave him sixpence, ami an onlooker offered to take half the dose tor half the reward. Detective Murry gave evidence ' that he went to.O’Neil’s place after seeing Utting at the hospital. O’Neil said he didnot think Titling would have been so bad. Witness asked, “ What are the powders ?” Defendant replied, “ I don’t know what they are. 1 only call them ‘knock-outs-’ (Laughter.) 1 give them to beer eaters. W hen they come to me and asi< lor sixpence, 1 say, ‘No. Give me a bottle and I’il fill it for you.’ 1 fill the bottle with beer and put in the powder. After they take it, within five minutes they go ‘wallop’ —(Laughter) —and can’t do any ting at all. But they get all light in two or three days, and keep oft\the beer for three months.” Witness and Detective Carter took accused to the city lockup. The bench intimated that it was not necessary to go into the defence. Accused would be discharged.
