BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At the ordinary meeting of Council held on Wednesday evening. Present—the Mayor and Crs Slitt, Sheahan, Blacklpck, Munson, Organ, and Whyte. Tiie following business was transacted. CORRESPONDENCE. From George Clark and others, calling attention to state of drain in Palmerstou street, near Lyttelton street, and the necessity of improvement for the safety and the health of inhabitants in tho vicinity. Received, and on the motion of Cr Organ, seconded by Cr Blackiock, the Public Works Committo was instructed to prepare specifications and call for tenders for the necessary work. From Messrs Hughes, Riley, and others*, making application for assistance in making a footpath on Wharf street near Empire hotel and offering to contribute 50s, as half tho estimated cost. On the mo!ion of Cr Whyte, seconded by Cr Organ, tho letter was referred' to the Public Works Committe with power to act in terms of proposal. From Inspector of Nuisances, Mr F. FI. Ibbetsoh, tendering his resignation on account of his leaving the District. Accepted. COLLIERY RESERVE. In reply to telegram forwarded to tho Provincial Secretary, by the Mayor requesting bis co operation in the matter of memorial from the Section Holder's, the following telegram was laid on the table : " Government Buildings, " Wellington, July 8, 1874. "To the Mayor,Westport, " Memorial, at present a great mistake, I will not support it, and protect (protest?) against the action as calculated to retard object. "Euct. J. O'Conor." • Proposed by Cr Whyte, seconded by Cr Organ and carried unanimously, " That Mr O'Couor's telegram, in re his action to obtain control of Colliery Reserve, to tho Borough Council be MEMORIAL. A draft memorial for signature by section holders on the Colliery Reseive, was read and adopted. GENERAL BUSINESS.
ft was resolved that Mr George White should be informed that the Council is not in a position to grant him occupation of the land applied for. Proposed by Cr Shcaahn seconded by
the Mayor and carried unanimously, " That his Honor the Superintendent be communicated with, and requested to ask the General Government to have the municipal reserves and streets Within the Borough, conveyed by Crown Grant to the Borough Council with as little delay as possible, in accordance with letter of Borough Council to the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, dated 19th March, 1871 " The offer of James Coulahan to do Work as day labourer was accepted, for such time as the Council might find it requisite to employ him.
