In the Supreme Court, John Wilmshurst, Surgeon Superintendent, of the ship isles of the .South, charged with larceny as a bailie of medical comforts, was sentenced to eighteen mouths' imprisonment. The City Council has decided to apply to the General Assembly for a Biil for an endowment of the city with the proceeds of the dog tax, auctioneers' and publican's licenses collected within the boundaries of the city. The members of the Kaiapoi Public Library have decided by 33 to 87 to open the Library and Reading Rooms from two o'clock to five every Sunday afternoon. WELLINGTON". July 7. . In tho Legislative Council the following Bills were read the first time—"lnspection and Regulation • of Machinery Act," " Offences against tho Persons Amendment Act," and the "Justc?es of tho Peace Amendment Act.") July 9. In the House of Representatives, yesterday, the Government agreed, upon a resolution of the House, calling for all telegrams and correspondence relating to charges made against Judge Chapmau in telegrams published in the Otago Daily times, to lay them on the table of the House An address of congratulation to her Majesty upon the carriage of tho Duke of Edinburgh, as moved by the Premier, was agreed to. Mr Curtis moved that the llcuso go into Committeo to consider the propriety of giving leave to introduce the Nelson loan' Dill. Ho paid the security was four hundred thousand acre 3 of land. The Premier paid he hoped the House would not allow any Bill of that kind to go to a second reading, until tho financial statement had been brought down, which would be in ten days time.
