BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the usual ordinary meeting, held on Wednesday evening—present, the Mayor and all.Gouncillors—the following busines was transacted : COEBESPOKDENC E. From George White, asking permission to occupy 10 acres of Municipal Reserve, north side of the Nine Mile Road, adjoining N. Edwarda and Co.'s suburban sections, as a paddock for run of horses. The applicant offering to agree to suclf conditions as to tenure and payment of rent as the Council might decide on. Referred to Reserves Committee, on the motion of Cr. Organ, seconded by Cr. "Blncklock.

From Edmund Roche, .calling the attention of the Council to the state of the approaches to the boat stairs roccntly erected at the end of Wakefield street, and requesting an expenditure of £(5 to improve the same, as a supplement to £2O already raised by public subscription and expended. A proposition by Cr. Slitt, seconded by Cr. Blacklock, "That the petition of E. Roche and others should bo received and referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act in the matter," was carried. Ayes, (J ; Noes, 3.

A letter from Mr J. G. Hay, asking for allotment of section in lieu of site now occupied by liini in Bright street, but endangered by the continual approach of the river, was referred to the Sections Committee.

IMPROVEMENTS IK JJRTGIIT STREET. It was proposed by Cr. Thorpe, i seconded by Cr. Munson, aud carried t unanimously, "That tho matter of ) forming a track in Bright street, from , Paluierston street to Queen street, be referred to the Public "Works Committee, with power to propace specifications, call for tenders, aud have the , work done, provided the cost does not , exceed £7 10s." ' ACCOUNTS. On the Finance Committee's recommendation, the following accounts were passed for payment:— £. s. d. Heid and Co 13 4 6 Buller News Co 11 17 10 Henry Carey 7 0 0 Payment of salaries to Town Clerk to Juno 10th, aud Inspector of Nuisances to June 3rd, were also sanctioned. GRAVEL SUTPLY Proposed by Cr. Organ, seconded by Cr. Sheahan, and carried, " That the Council call for tenders for supply of 500 yards of gravel for repair of streets, and that tho Public Works Committee prepare -the necessary specifications." MEMOBIA.Ii re HENLEY STREET. Proposed by Cr. Organ, seconded by Cr. Suisted, " That the Council expend a sum not exceeding £l6 in making drains and pathway between Henley aud Pell streets, and that Mr O'Conor be informed that on payment by him of a similar amount to the Town Clerk, tenders will be called for the work." Cr. Sheahan made amendment " That consideration of the subject be postponed until the Council had been placed in possession of the £2OO voted by the Provincial Council, for clearing streets in Westport. Tor amendment Crs. Sheahan, Blacklock, and Whyte. For motion, the Mayor and Crs. Organ, Thorpe, Suisted, S.titt, and Munson. Motion carried. GENERAL RESINESS. Cr. Thorpe proposed, and Cr. Organ seconded, " That in all cases of grants in aid of Public Works made by the Council, when time is not specified, one month shall be the limit within which such grant shall be available." Proposed by Cr. Sheahan, seconded by tho Mayor, aud carried, " That the Borough Solicitor be instructed to prepare a bill to amend any defects which may exist in the constitution of the Council, aud any consequent illegality in the election and proceedings of the Council, such bill to be forwarded to tho General Government with a request that the Government will undertake the passage of the measure." Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Sheahan, and carried, " That a notice be inserted in the Borough Gazette, intimating that the gravel pit on Municipal lieserve is now open, and that uo gravel will be permitted to be removed from any other pit within the Borough." Carried Proposed by Cr. Munson, seconded by Cr. Thorpe aud carried, " That the seal left with the Council by Cr. Suisted be returned to him, with thanks for the use of the same." NOTICES OF MOTION. By Cr. Thorpe—That a By-law Committee be appointed, for the purpose of dra\ving-up Bcgulations under the XIII. Schedule, and also for framing special by-laws. Such committee to cousist of tho members of tho Council formerly appointed for such purpose. Tho meeting then stood adjourued.
