The following is the proposed expenditure of the Provincial Government : —For building schools and other public buildings, £133,001 ; bridges, £108,081; roads, £51,871; railways, £192,002; irrigation, public libraries, water supply for Lyttelton, £SG,IS3. The Council recommend that a sum be placed upon the Estimates for continuing the geological surveys of the Province. WELLINGTON. Tenders are called for the conveyance to Greymouth of 300 or 400 tons of railway bar iron and fastenings. The rate of interest allowed on deposits in the Post Office Savings Banks will be increased after the present month from 4 per cent to on deposits under £2OO, and from 3 to 4 on £SOO. Greymouth coal is rapidly superseding Newcastle among the blacksmiths, and is growing into favor for household purposes. AUCKLAND. Juno 11. The Provincial Council has carried, by a large majority, a motion affirming the desirability of the General Government retaining control of the police. GBAIIAMSTOWN. June 11. The Thames Advertiser has been publishing a series of disclosures about land jobbing, and charged Mr Commissioner Mackay with buying a large block of country for his [own private use and benefit, when acting as agent for the Government for the purchase of lauds. Mackay has commenced proceedings for libel. The Advertiser has declined to retract, repeals the charges, and is prepared to prove them, also that the land is registered in Mackay's name.
