WESTPORT ANNUAL SPORTS.

A public meeting was held at the Post Office Hotel on Tuesday evening to arrange preliminaries for the usual sports at Christmas-tide. There was a goc-d attendance. Mr John Seaton in the chair. The Chairman stated that, acting on a suggestion mude by a gentleman who had always taken a warm interest in local sports, a subscription list had been already circulated, and ho could congratulate the meeting upon having a good starting point. The list showed subscriptions amounting to £IOO, and the town had only been very partially canvassed, and the outside district was as yet untouched. He thought there should be no difficulty in raising at least £3OO.

Enquiries were made as to what race-course would be used, and the chairman explained that the course on the north side of the Orawaiti had been offered on certain terms, but that no decided action had been taken. Opinions were expressed that Gibson'* course would be preferable for many reasons, but the subject was left for consideration of tho Committee to be appointed The following resolutions were then put and carried nem. con : That a Committee be appointed to organise the Westport annual races and sports to come off during the Christmas Holidays, 1873. That the races and sports be held on Friday and Saturday, the 23th and 27th December proximo. That the gentlemen herein named form a Committee to give effect to the foregoing resolutions, viz: Messrs Gilmer (Hou. Treasurer), Ed. lugs (Hon. Secretary), G. Falla, J. Seaton, J. Colvin, P. J. M'Kenna, F. M'Farlane, E. Gothard, J. H. Gibson, E. Roche, A. D. Dobson, Dr Thorpe, John Eughes, I. Graves, G. White, C. Croawell, James Simpson, M. Organ, J. Blacklock, and J. Simpson Spit). That the first Committee meeting be held at the Post Office Hotel on Friday evening at 8 p.m. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated proceedings.
