BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At tho weekly meeting on Wednesday last, tlie 15th inst, present: the Mayor and all members of the Council. The following business was transacted : CORRESPONDENC ti. Letters from Mr A. Ambrose and others referring to the non-granting by the Section Commission of new sections to holders of sites in Kennedy and Wallabi street block, and from Mr T. E. M'Carthy* asking right to lease or occupy one acre of the colliery reserve between Eintoul street and the telegraph line as a site for a brewery, claiming such privilege as enabling him to establish a local industry serviceable to the community. Cr. Munson proposed that the letter from Mr Ambrose should not be received. The motion lapsed, thero being no seconder. Proposed by Cr. Organ, and seconded by Cr. Blacklock, that the substance of the letter of Mr Ambrose be submitted to the Land Commission for their consideration,— Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, and seconded by Cr. Suisted, That Crs. Organ, Blacklock, and Sheahan be a Committee to give effect to the foregoing resolution.— Carried. Proposed by Cr. "Whytc, seconded by Cr. Sheahan, That the letter of Mr

M'Carthy be received, and that the ordering thereon be deferred until the Council can deal with the subject of the same.—Carried. deferring to the letter received from inhabitants of Wallabi street, Cr. Organ explained that the work therein requested to be done had been executed OENERA.L BUStXKSS. The report of the By.-laws Committee was received, and consideration thereof deferred until the next meeting. Proposed by the -Mayor and .seconded by Cr. Stitt, that the account of Mr 11. Trent for £2 2s, for map of district, supplied to the Coal and Railway Committee for use in public business should be paid.—Carried. The Mayor stated that he had received no further information from the Warden in respect of rents of sections ou Colliery Reserve. NOTICES OF MOTION By Cr. Thorpe : That in view of the great inconveniences resulting from the present condition of that portion of Bright street between Palmerston and Queen streets, the former resolution referring to the subject but postponing the authorised work upon it until after the completion of other works therein mentioned, be rescinded, and that the formation of the above described section of Bright street be at once undertaken. By Cr. Sheahan : That in the opinion of the Council the existence of Municipal government in Westport would be seriously affected by the introduction of the Local Revenues Act, 1573, under its existing form, as the same rating power of £5 per cent on the annual value of property is conferred on the Board under clause 2G of said Act, as is possessed by the Council under the Municipal Corporation Act, 1867. " That therefore the Council deem it necessary and expedient that his Houor the Superintendent proclaim the Municipality of Westport a Sub-District, under the Goldfields Local Revenues Act, 1873, in accordance with section 12 of the said Act, enabling the ratepayer within the Municipal boundaries to avail themselves of the advantages as contained under clause 27 of the Local Revenues Act. That in order to give effect to resolution No. 2, as affirmed at public meeting, a respectful memorial be prepared requesting his Honor the Superintendent to introduce a bill into the . Provincial Council at its next session, to amend the Goldfields Local Revenues Act, 1873, in order to exempt from .operations of the said Act municipalities within the Nelson South West Goldfields.
