INQUEST ON CATTLE.

SUPPOSED SUICIDE. CHiJISTCHCTBCH CEIMINAL SESSIONS. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH) (feom oue own cobeespondent.) Gbeyhouth, Friday. 4.30 p.m. The inquest on Cattle was resumed this afternoon. The proceedings are watched with intense interest. There are thirty witnesses to be examined. Up to 4.30 p.m. nothing fresh had been elicited. Edmund Trahey, who was recently committed for sheep stealing, but admitted to bail, has been found drowned to-day, near Saltwater. The unfortunate man is believed to have committed suicide. Nelson, Friday, 4.30 p.m. Sir D. Monro applied this morning for a rule nisi, to show why a criminal information should not be filed against Messrs Luckie and Collins, pro. prietors and publishers of the " Colonist," for libelling him. Eule granted. Cheistchuech, March, & The Criminal Sessions opened on tie 6th, before his Honor Mr Justice Gressou. His Honor in his charge referred with regret to the number of cases that wen included in the calendar, and on the gravity of the offences with which manj of the persons were charged. There wen four indictments for murder. The following cases were tried and sentences pronounced : Gustave Schmidt, found guilty of Hit lawfully wounding, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment with haul labor; and Mark Turner, for an w natural offence, was sentenced to fin years' penal servitude. Celeno's trial for the murder of hi fellow servant, comes off on Wednesday. The case is clear, and a conviction ii certain. Dunedik, March Bthl The nomination of candidates for the seven Dunedin seats in the Provincial Council of Otago took place here! yesterday, when twenty were nominated! The show of hands was in favor & Graham, Barton, Smythies, Barney Bathgate, E. B. Cargill, and Eeynolds The poll will be taken on the 13ti instant. The Governor is expected to arnfl on Thursday night. The city declines it give his Excellency a public reception because he would not come on an earlier day. He holds a levee on Monday.
