TERRIBLE MURDER AT GREY. MOUTH.

The Grey " Star " of Wednesday writes:— Just as we were about sending our paper to press, information was received that a most foul murder had been perpetrated on James Cattle, a well-known and early resident of G-reymouth, who, until a few months ago was landlord of the Golden Age Hotel, Richmond Quay. We have no time to obtain particulars from the police, who, while we write this, are engaged in investigating the circumstances of this extraordinary, and at present mysterious murder. The body of Cattle was found lying dead about four o'clock this afternoon, on the far side of the lagoon, in or near Hildebrand's paddock. The face and head had been fearfully battered —so much so that the features were quite indistinguishable, anc Cuttle was only recognised by his clothes. Indeed by some it is doubtec whether the body is that of Cattle But it has been ascertained that Cattle has been away from his home tor the last two or three days, and, from the appeirance of the body, it is likely that some 48 hours or more may have elapsed since the murder was com. mitted. Neither watch, money, nor property of any kind was found on the body o the deceased. Cattle is said to have recently been drinking, and it is sua. pected that a quarrel with some person has led to his untimely an< horrible end. An inquest will be held on the body to-morrow.
