The s.s. Tararua, Captain Hagley, arrived from Melbourne at noon today, after a splendid passage of four days nineteen hours. She experienced a terrific g.ile to the we3t of Solander Island, on her passage, aud was hove to for forty-five hours.
The Oineo arrived in Melbourne on the Ist instant at 5 p.m. John Barker, of West Bridge, Tasmania, is insolvent. Liabilities, LIO,OOO. An application was made by Mr Ireland before the Judges in Chambers, on Saturday, for the discharge of Hugh Glass, on the grounds that the warrant did not contain any special averment, and was invalid. Mr Miehie opposed, but the Chief Justice sustained the application, and discharged Mr Glass. No application was made by Mr. Quarterman, who is still in gaol. The Argus attributes Mr Glass's release to the Attorney-General's ignorance of law. The Age condemns the Judges, and says they gave a Wrong decision, aud hopes the matter will be brought before the Privy Council. It predicts a long and violent collision between the Supreme Court and Parliament. Glass threatens an actioD against the Speaker, and claims large damages. The Melbourne Banking Company have declared a dividend of ten per cent.
The Edina, Warrnambool steamer, struck on a rock not laid down in the chart, near Lonsdale Eeef, on Friday. Pumps kept the water under till she reached anchor. The Navigation Board investigated the matter, and exonerated the captain of the steamer. The Pharos was despatched to the locality, for the purpose of making a survey. The Rev. James Taylor has been ap. pointed Pastor to a congregation at Collingwood. Isaac Ross's tender for the Eastern Market has been accepted. The amount is L 7777 7s 7d.
Silas Dogrel, dairyman at Kew, has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife.
Complimentary messages were sent by the Tasmanian cable on the Ist of May. The line is in working order. The high rate of charges is causing dissatisfaction. Captain Kennedy, Pilot, has been exonerated from all blame in causing the Hurricane disaster. The Catholic prelates were entertained at Toorak, on Monday. Craigie, the Victorian mining speculator, was killed at Armidale. The Customs Union Conference opened yesterday. The Press and public were excluded. Wool is lower, and sales are dull. Halligan, who disappeared from Rockhampton, with a quantity of gold, was murdered. The traces of a strug' gle have been discovered.
