THE PRINCE'S VISIT TO OTAGO
The following are some further par* ticulars of Prince Alfred's visit tfl Otago : When H.M.S. Blanche reachefl Port Chalmers a thick fog along t™ coast caused a long passage. Outsida Port Chalmers Heads she was met bfl the steamers "Wallace, Tairoa, anfjj Greelong. "When the Duke landetH addresses were presented by &■ Honor the Superintendent, on bebaH of the province ; and one by the Mayoß of Port Chalmers. The' Prince wal then driven to Dunedin iu a carriage with eight greys attached. Arrived afl the city boundaries, the Corporation presented au address; and at tb« Caledonian Society grouuds 2,008 children sang the National AnthenS Au address and gold medal were prM sented. The Duke then proceeded 19 his temporary residence at Fern Hiß He afterwards attended a Eeviev, m which there were GOO Volunteers. *j the evening, he attended the Theatrjß and afterwards drove through thjH town, which was brilliantly illnMfj ated. Twenty thousand persons weijJJ about; and there was great enthusiast™ In the evening after the races thfl Prince attended a dinner given by «MJ Superintendent. On Friday mornifljHJ the Duke received addresses andafteJJ wards opened the Horticultural giving it the name of the Eoyal HofiJ
ticultural Society. His Royal Highness then returned to Fern House, and afterwards embarked. The Prince expressed himself much pleased with his reception in Otago. He said the Otago Volunteers were the most efficient body he had seen since he left England.
