THE NATIVE WAR.
The following are among items received by the Hokitika and Christchurch papers:— Wellington, May 6. The Governor hopes to visit the Ngapubis with the Prince. If lie does so, it will prevent him from returning to "Wellington by the Ist of June" He has, therefore, left a Commission to open the Assembly. The Napier Militia and eight companies of the Wellington Volunteers have been released from actual service. May 10. An order has arrived at Napier with despatches from Colonel Whitmore, dated May 4th. The Colonel is at Port Galatea, Rangitiki River, and is getting short of supplies. He is expected to reach Lake Waikamoana to-day. Te Kooti is said to be at Waikare Lake. The Circular Saw Company have advanced the offer they made to the New Zealand Steam Navigation Company to £27,300. The nomination of the Superintendent takes place on the 17th. Dr Eeatherstone will most likely have a walk over. Patea, May 7. Colonel Lyon has returned from the up-river expedition. On returning he encountered Hau-haus near Little Taranaki, and attacked them, killing three men and one woman. There was no loss on our side. The rest of the Hau-haus fled into the bush.
The native meeting at Rangitiki was attended by seventeen hundred natives and the King declared in favor of peace, but his speech is not thought likely to influence the fighting natives. Auckland is to have a new large floating dock. Ihaia, with the friendly Natives under Captain Good, has been sent to join the Tuapari Natives, near the White Bluffs. The Tuapari are in pay of the Government, hence this move. It ia believed that a fight between them and Ihaia's people is probable ; if so, the Tuapari will be worsted.
