"THE INSOLENCE OF OFFICE."

(To the Editor of tJie Westport Times.)

Sib, —" Hats off " appears to be the ordor of tho day iu tho Warden's office, and with many others I must enter my protest against, not the taking of the hat off, but the uncouth and offensive way in which the clerk of the Court, Mr Whitefoord, conveys his pleasure in regard to that appendage. I may state that a few days ago I went to the office for the purpose of registering a water-right for myself and party, and was most gratuitously insulted by the above-named gentleman by the manner in which I was requested to remove my hat. Rather than comply with his insolently-worded request I left the office, and had to get a mate to act in tho matter. In all Banks, merchants' offices, and Wardens' offices that I have been in the habit of frequenting, I have always consulted my own taste in the matter, and retained my golgotha ; and I shall certainly iu future decline to uncover before the individual who presides over the Warden's office, and should recommend my brother miners to do the same. I think Mr Braithwaite, in his letter in to-day's paper, must have made a mistake in regard to Mr Harris, as I have always met with the utmost courtesy at that gentleman's bands. My motto in visiting Mr White foord in future will be " Hats on !" I remain, Sir, yours truly, Alex. Williamson. May 11.

Alex. Williamson
