THE WAIPOUA BRIDGE ENQUIRY.

"An enquiry with regard'to the maintenance of the Wnipoiia 'Bridge, was opened it Mastcrton this morning before Mr W. S. Shortt, Commissioner, Chief Clerk in tho Lauds Department, there also being present -Mr F. G. Moore (clerk), Mr W. 11. Beetham (chairman) of tho Wnirarapa North County Council; Mr Brown (town clerk), His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. Heron), and Messrs Hessey and Chamberlain representing the Masterton Borough Council. Tho Chairman (Mr Shortt) read the proclamation appointing tho commission. In the pursuanco of the commission he issued notices to the Borough Council and County Council appointing this meeting, and ho called upon tho representatives of the County Council to open their case, Mr Moore said he thought it best to give a short resume of the position of affairs, Tho Waipoua Bridge was originally built by the Wellington Provincial Council, A notice was given in February, 1885, to the Borough Council, asking whether there was any objection to the bridge being vested in them. In May, ISBS, the Minister wrote that the bridge, with five chains of road on either 'side,had been vested in the Borough Council at their own request. No communication, exceptinganaccouuf, was received from the Borough until 17th November, 1894. When the bridge fell into a state of disrepair, and numerous complaints were sent into tho County Council, these were always referred to the Borough Council.
