THE MIDLAND RAILWAY ARBITRATION.

The formal proceedings of the Arbitration Court began at 10 a.m. Sir R, Stoat at once raised the question of the jurisdiction of the Court, contending that the contract having expired, the right to arbitrate had also ceased,- and further that the ■seiiure "of tho lino by the tfoverntoent had also suspended all rights 1 under the contract. He said he raised this question now bocauso he did not want to spring a surprise on the Court, but he would not ask for a decision till the ovidcnce'on the points was heard, when 'he would submit the question again. Mr Hutchison briefly replied refusing to concede any.of the points raised, and also contended that as the line was soizcd after the notice of arbitration was given, the Court could not take any notice of it.
